It’s Veganuary! A time of the year when even the most avid meat lovers ditch the steak for a Veggie Chilli Sin Carne!
But what about if you’re on a Keto diet?? Isn't keto all about meat and eggs?
While usually associated with high fat / low carb meats and animal-based foods, when approached sensibly the Keto diet can actually be very successfully adapted to fit a plant-based diet.
On a vegan keto diet, clean minimally processed plant-based foods will become your new friends (if they aren’t already) include tofu, low carb vegetables including avocado, spinach and leafy greens, mushrooms, courgette, broccoli, cauliflower and cucumber.
Additionally, a keto-vegan diet can include nuts and seeds, including macadamias, walnuts, almonds, and flax / hemp / chia / sunflower /pumpkin seeds alongside coconut (lots of coconut) and olive oil.
So what’s on the Keto Vegan menu?
Non-Dairy: coconut yoghurt (unsweetened), coconut cream, vegan cheeses
Protein: Tofu, tempeh, seitan, vegan protein powders, some low-carb meat alternatives
Veggies: avocado, leafy greens, courgettes, mushrooms, broccoli, cucumber and cauliflower.
Nuts and seeds: a wide variety
Fruit: LOW GI berries and grapefruit
Sweeteners: Stevia or monkfruit
Fermented foods: Kimchi and Sauerkraut, Sea vegetables
Oils/fats: coconut oil, olive oil, flaxseed oil, vegan butters
What’s off the menu?
Pulses, Grains (all including quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat), no fruit except a few berries.
